Compute Storage or Cloud Storage?

How do "compute cloud storage" and "online cloud storage" differ? When should one storage type be used over another?

Yes, a virtual server does come with storage attached, but there is a big difference between the two that can make an even bigger difference to your project.

Compute cloud storage looks and acts like a hard drive (or disk volume) which can be attached (or mounted) to a cloud virtual server. The typical use case for this type of storage is as either a primary/root disk for your cloud virtual server, or as one or more secondary data disks for your cloud virtual server.

A common use case example is the C: drive and D: drive for a cloud virtual server.

Online cloud storage, on the other hand, is not a traditional file system based hard drive. Instead, it looks and acts like a large, accessible online storage location. There are multiple use cases for this type of storage, which include:

  • Large scale storage for content-rich web applications
  • Internet accessible storage for content distribution, and
  • Low cost, off-site storage for archiving, backup and disaster recovery.

The differences may not seem that significant to many, but to some they can mean a great deal indeed – not only in functionality and convenience, but also in cost.
